A + A // I designed and illustrated a book cover!
It's been wayyyyy too long since I last did an Awkward and Awesome post. Not even sure why it's been so long. It just has been ages! Hopefully this post is awesome enough (sorry for a lame pun attempt, guys) to make up for that.

A + A // Snow Day
Awkward:
- Being told "Hi!" by someone and "Hi!"ing back only to be told that they had actually tried to greet you earlier but you had totally ignored them.... so sorry please accept my deepest apologies it was a crowded room and I didn't hear you.......
- Running down the stairs and opening the door at the bottom only to find that your lovely friend had hidden behind the door to jump out at you and does jump out at you with a ferocious scream (that was loud enough to wake up a gigantic T-Rex dinosaur which was sleeping with its hands over its ears half a mile away, I'm sure). It gave me a terrible fright anyway.

A + A // "Have a lice day!"
Awkward:
- Telling the customers to "have a nice day!" after they've paid for their food. Then thinking that's getting a bit boring so changing it up a bit and telling them to "have a lovely day" instead. Then getting the two mixed up so what comes out is an embarrassing mixture of the two. Dear customers, all we want is for you to have a lice day.

A + A // card tricks, comments and creamy mochaccinos
Awkward:
- Sleeping in the sleepout and having that early morning dash to the house after you get up because it's so. cold. outside.
- Telling a [wonderful] joke and having a very tiny, very polite ripple of laughter go through your hearers. Like seriously, did nobody actually appreciate it??
- Johnny: "The thing about wearing lots of pairs of thick socks is that you have to keep putting more on." Me; "???" Him: "You wear a pair of socks for a while. Then your feet start getting cold so you put on another pair of socks. For a few days/weeks that's fine. Then your feet get cold again so you have to put another pair on as well. You get cold no matter how many pairs of socks you wear! That's why I always go back to one and work back up from there slowly." Me: *wearing three pairs of thick socks* "Oh."
- Forgetting how old your sister is and constantly saying she was 17 when she was actually turning 17 that week. Like, I should know how old she is. She's always been 14 months younger than me. And always will be, too.
- Discovering that I have no less than SIX blankets, a thick duvet and a thin quilt on my bed. I mean, it's pretty cold in the sleepout but six blankets sounds like a lot. I'm nice and warm though, which is good!
- Being told something that just kind of floors you and makes you go, wow, I would never ever ever have realized that. Crazy.
- Hearing other people's embarrassing moments that just make you cringe on their behalf (but also make you feel better about your own constantly embarrassing and awkward moments!!).
- That hunt for pens when there are none to be found... anywhere. Strange how it's always pens, paper clips, blu tack (sticky stuff that sticks stuff together), cellotape and scissors that is always missing. We own heaps of those items but there are never to be found, even though they have clear locations. Frustrating.
Awesome:
- Creamy mochaccinos made with cream from our cow - seriously the best thing in the world!
- Collapsing into bed when you're really, really exhausted.
- Learning new card tricks and practicing them on your siblings. Then having your siblings show you more card tricks and being like, wow, these are actually really good! #BenandJohnnyaremagic
- Being asked to judge a competition at a public speaking group you used to attend. It's going to be really fun! And being asked is such an honour. :)

- The Google Images result for 'cute bunny' - SO ADORABLE!!! Also a surprising number of the cute bunnies have their tongues out, which is kind of weird since the rabbits we used to have didn't randomly poke their tongues out. But it's cute so whatever. Also I just wanted to mention that one of the pictures on the search result was wearing a WOOLY HAT. It was ridiculously cute. (Sorry. I'll now stop going slightly crazy of these cute bunnies.)
- Stunningly beautiful sunrises. *sighs*
- Putting up pictures in the sleepout and making it a bit more homelike. One picture I purchased in China at an art market and I've never put it on a wall before now. I've been saving it for our sleepout. So exciting to see it on the wall!
- Quiet afternoons practicing music with Danella.

A + A // When Does the Library Close?
Awkward:
- Being early for a violin lesson so you decide to go for a walk along some unfamiliar streets. As you walk along a car slows behind you and you are startled by the driver of the car calling to you, "Excuse me!! Do you know where **** Street is?" You are slightly startled and also a bit disappointed because you're a helpful person but you can't help because you don't know the area and have only been walking for like five minutes. So you tell her you can't help and she drives off. A little later you turn around and walk back the way you came... to come across the very street that the lady had been looking for. Of course she's long gone, and you discover the reason neither of you had seen it was because a large tree had been blocking the sign so it was impossible to see from the other direction.
- Missing one step at the top and falling down the rest of the entire flight of stairs.
- Arriving at the library expecting to spend a period of time there working on a project before I was due at work... to discover they were busy closing the library (turns out I neglected to check what time they close on a Saturday) and so I sat outside on a random bench in the wind doing my project with the wind trying to sneakily blow away all my papers until it was eventually time for me to start work.
- Your mind being completely filled with other things and stopping you from hearing what people are saying. Frustrating. To say the least.
- Starting conversations then not being able to finish them for various reasons.
- Discovering that you follow a massive amount of blogs and deciding to trim down your blog reading list to a more manageable 42 blogs (many of which don't post very often, but still...)
- Grabbing the hot part of a curling iron in an extremely magnificent display of stupidity. Like seriously, Bonnie, how many times have you burnt your poor fingers with that thing?!
Awesome:
- The classic movie "Around the World in 80 Days"- so funny. We recently re-watched it as a family.
- Writing a poem and having it all come together nicely.
- This random little mathematical gymnastic operation:
111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321
- Having a major spring clean and go-through of all your stuff. Ends up with siblings getting lots of things you don't need/want anymore! Feels soooo good to have things a bit more orderly. It was getting ridiculous. However, let's be real here:
- Great quotes. I love this A.W Tozer quote:
- Coming across interesting little peculiarities in the Bible that you have to research. Things like in Habakkuk 3:19, discovering in the ESV version it says "God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer's; he makes me tread on my high places" whereas you'd only known it in the NIV - "The Sovereign Lord is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights." And the difference between the 'my heights' and 'the heights' just strikes you. And you wonder about the meaning of those differences for ages. Different translations are so interesting.

- Searching the bookshelves for a particular book and discovering in doing so another book you'd been wanting to read... even going to the extent of looking it up on the Internet longingly... but thought you'd never get to read it! Turns out that even after packing all our books and unpacking them again you don't actually even know the full extent of our book library. (It's 'Mountains of Spices by Hannah Hurnand, in case you were wondering!)- Great quotes. I love this A.W Tozer quote:

A + A // CHESTNUTS!!
Awkward:
- People referring to inside jokes between the two of you when there are others in the conversation. I mean, it's fun and all that, but it makes me feel bad for the other people who don't have the faintest idea what we're talking about! Inside jokes are best kept inside.
- Brushing your teeth absentmindedly and continuing brushing your teeth for a rather long time until you realise that you could have stopped ages ago.
- Collecting chestnuts. Involves getting the chestnuts out of their extremely prickly cases which means you spend ten minutes after the expedition fishing prickles out of your fingers with tweezers.
- Wondering why your bobby pin won't go into your hair - and discovering that's likely to be because you are trying to put it in backwards (the closed end of a bobby pin doesn't grab onto your hair, people).
- Biking home after a long shift at work against a 35km/hr headwind. Not fun.
Awesome:
- Playing Hide and Seek with Jacob. It's actually a really fun game!! I shouldn't let so much time pass by before I play it again. :) It was hilarious.
- Chocolate eclairs
- Eating roasted chestnuts. Those things are amazing. After all the work of collecting them it's nice to have something to reward your efforts.
- Meditating on a verse for a while and then opening up your blog reader and discovering a friend posted a blog post on the verse you'd been thinking about. Really cool!
- Finding out the car is free so you can go to something you really want to go to. (A few of us share a vehicle).
- Great chats about life and the Bible etc in Bible study groups.
- Cream in hot drinks
- Treehouses and baby bunnies and sunrises and sunsets and barefeet in long grass and rainbows reaching down from heaven to touch earth and dew on flowers and friends to spend time with and standing on top of hills in really strong wind and just feeling the wind go right through you... and finding round smooth pebbles that skip on water really well and sparkly glittery die cuts that are just really cute and meatloaf and wow, I could go on forever.

Actually, did you know that lots of people don't know much about chestnuts? Allow me to educate you. There are two main kinds of chestnuts (at least, in New Zealand) that I know of. Horse chestnuts (do NOT try to eat them!!) and edible (sweet) chestnuts. These are horse chestnuts.
See the sparse prickles and the colour of the case? The chestnuts themselves (the brown things) aren't too different from edible chestnuts, so it's best to use the cases to discern them.
These are edible chestnuts on the tree.
See the vast quantity of the prickles and the case colour? The cases are quite different from the horse chestnut cases.
If you want to eat them, do not try to eat them raw! Remove the brown chestnuts from their prickly cases with much caution, then boil or roast them. If you roast them make sure you score them with a knife before putting them in the oven otherwise they'll explode. Once they've been boiled or roasted you can peel the brown skin off to reveal the white flesh inside. :)

A + A // Please, 21st, stay in the distant future!
Awkward:
- Lying in bed just thinking of all the things you've forgotten to write down that you've got to do the next day... so up you get, write them down, and go back to bed. To sleep. But no, you keep thinking of more things. So you get up (at least four times) to write them down. Moving house creates sleepless nights, a fuzzy brain and lots of work to be done.
- When your family discovers something you wrote in 2009 (it's rather embarrassing actually) and are like, "Oh, this is great! We're going to save this for your 21st!" and proceed to photocopy it so it doesn't get lost and you're just like.... well... 21st, stay in the far distant future please, and thank you.
- Someone seeing you and being like, "Oh you actually look really nice today!" leaving you wondering if that means you don't normally look nice. :/ It's the addition of that 'actually'. Makes you question rather a lot.
- Getting a REALLY BAD fit of the giggles at the dinner table where you literally cannot stop laughing. And your family just all start laughing at you. Because you're so hilarious. And eventually the comments start rolling in when your siblings start describing (in between giggles) exactly what you look like when you're unable to stop laughing. "Your face looks flat." "You look like a Chinese person." "No, you look like a sunburnt Chinese person". (Me asking after I've managed to stop laughing eventually: "Why a sunburnt Chinese person?" Them: "Because your face is so red." Right......)
- When one of your younger younger brothers (the younger younger brothers as opposed to the younger brothers - that means Caleb and Jacob instead of Ben and Johnny) - packages up a box to be moved when we move house. He tapes it up and everything and then writes on the top, "Very heavy!" I picked up the box to see how heavy it was and it is not heavy at all. I could hold it using about two fingers. It was hilarious considering the weight of some of those book boxes I packed and didn't write 'heavy' on the top of!
- Dropping an entire Cambro (approx 5 litre container we put meat and vegetables into) full of sliced onion while at work. Seriously. I was also carrying a Cambro of bacon and two bags of lettuce so I'm glad those didn't fall, but honestly, people, dropping an entire Cambro of food is the sort of horror story we tell new employees! Such a waste of the onion and it completely ruins your day. My boss wasn't too thrilled with me. As you can probably imagine.
Awesome:
- Kind friends who help us move house. And more kind friends who babysit the younger children so us older ones and Mum can pack up.
- Weddings!!! Two friends marrying each other is just so exciting.
- Heaps and heaps of nice ripe blackboy peaches.

- Finishing a Progress Review for my course really early
- Getting to hold a really really really tiny baby who is just super adorable... I can't wait for our own little tiny super adorable baby to make his or her appearance at the end of August!
- Being invited to be a counselor at a Bible camp (Jumpstart, for those who are familiar with it) in Nelson. The campers are aged up to 18 and I won't have even turned 18 before the camp! I mentioned this to the man organizing it when he rang me asking me if I would like to be a counselor.... and I was so encouraged and thrilled when he said that he thinks I'm really spiritually mature or else he wouldn't have asked me! Totally made my day.
- Paying for something with the exact right change. It's just so exciting.
- My lovely sister's photography. I haven't had photos of me playing my violin really before (Grandma took one once but I was actually wearing my pyjamas in the photo, believe it or not, and I've never liked it at all! Obviously it's not terrible because Grandma hung it on the wall in their kitchen... but still, pyjamas?!) so I was thrilled with how they turned out. Thanks, Danella.
- Unearthing all kinds of interesting things in the process of packing up and moving. Not a day (or hour) goes past without Mum (or any of us, really) going, "Come and look at this, everyone!"
- Saying the same thing as someone else at the same time. It just makes you feel quite (oh, I don't know), special? That your mind runs along the same track as another's at times.
- Picking up a Q in Scrabble when you already have a U
- Being invited to a friend's birthday where you have to dress up as someone from Ancient Rome. And thinking, what on earth am I going to wear. And after a little foray into some wardrobes and a little advice from helpful siblings coming up with something relatively painlessly and quickly! Such a good feeling.
- Taking your shoes off.

Such a waste of the onion and it completely ruins your day. My boss wasn't too thrilled with me. As you can probably imagine.
Awesome:
- Kind friends who help us move house. And more kind friends who babysit the younger children so us older ones and Mum can pack up.
- Weddings!!! Two friends marrying each other is just so exciting.
- Heaps and heaps of nice ripe blackboy peaches.

- Finishing a Progress Review for my course really early
- Getting to hold a really really really tiny baby who is just super adorable... I can't wait for our own little tiny super adorable baby to make his or her appearance at the end of August!
- Being invited to be a counselor at a Bible camp (Jumpstart, for those who are familiar with it) in Nelson. The campers are aged up to 18 and I won't have even turned 18 before the camp! I mentioned this to the man organizing it when he rang me asking me if I would like to be a counselor.... and I was so encouraged and thrilled when he said that he thinks I'm really spiritually mature or else he wouldn't have asked me! Totally made my day.
- Paying for something with the exact right change. It's just so exciting.
- My lovely sister's photography. I haven't had photos of me playing my violin really before (Grandma took one once but I was actually wearing my pyjamas in the photo, believe it or not, and I've never liked it at all! Obviously it's not terrible because Grandma hung it on the wall in their kitchen... but still, pyjamas?!) so I was thrilled with how they turned out. Thanks, Danella.

- Unearthing all kinds of interesting things in the process of packing up and moving. Not a day (or hour) goes past without Mum (or any of us, really) going, "Come and look at this, everyone!"
- Saying the same thing as someone else at the same time. It just makes you feel quite (oh, I don't know), special? That your mind runs along the same track as another's at times.
- Picking up a Q in Scrabble when you already have a U
- Being invited to a friend's birthday where you have to dress up as someone from Ancient Rome. And thinking, what on earth am I going to wear. And after a little foray into some wardrobes and a little advice from helpful siblings coming up with something relatively painlessly and quickly! Such a good feeling.
- Taking your shoes off.

A + A // Johnny the Juggler
Awkward:
- That my Pinteresting consists of absolutely nothing for days and weeks then having a Pinterest splurge and pinning like a hundred pins in one day.
- That feeling of butterflies you get when you're heading somewhere for something where you have no idea what's going to happen and it's just like that excited nervous trepidation, you know what I mean?
- Turning up at an event on time and everyone else was really early so you walk in *on time, bear in mind* and everyone looks at you like, "Where have you been?!" I was on time.
- My life in general. :P
- Seeing a tutorial on how to make a pair of jeans into a denim skirt and thinking, "Oh, that looks easy! I could do that!" Turns out it isn't quite as easy as it looks. The back was great. The back was awesome. The front, hmm, not so good. I need to re do it completely. :/
- Being super worried about something and then your worries never coming to fruition. I mean, it's a great feeling, but you still get really annoyed at yourself for being so worried for nothing.
- Starting to say something at exactly the same time someone else takes it into their head to say something. So you both stop and awkwardly giggle and do that whole, "No, you go" thing.
- Waking up ridiculously early in the morning and not being able to get back to sleep so you just lie there pondering on life.
- Getting your hair snagged on things. Like rosebushes.
- Going out somewhere for dinner and then your family having something nice for dessert and saving some for you but not telling you. So some time later you discover it, well and truly aged, deep in a biscuit tin and wonder, "Oh, what's this?" The reply, "It's yours!" is just depressing. :/
- Me dreaming about a new blog design. Don't get me wrong, I love the purple, but I think it's probably about time for something new. I hate the stark, boring white a lot of blogs are. So I was laying in bed trying to think of exactly what sort of colour scheme I want..... and it's awfully hard. I'm like, "Well, I love green. Lots of vibrant green would be nice. But then, oh, sunshine yellow would be fantastical! Paired with like a deep turquoise or teal so it's not too bright and overpowering. But then that might look a bit childish. Navy blue would be pretty. Perhaps I could put that with some splashes of yellow. But navy is quite dark. I like lighter, brighter colours. How about pink? Oh, pink is way too childish. And besides, I've done pink on my blog before. But I do love rose pink. Maybe I'll do a light brown wood effect or cream with the pink and then have some roses. Roses climbing up some sort of something. Yes, how nice.
Bear in mind I also don't know how to do fancy blog designing. But there's always room for dreaming, right?!
Maybe I'll stay purple for a while. The choices are too hard!

- That Johnny, after deciding he wanted to learn to juggle, watched some Youtube videos on juggling and practiced for hours with some tennis balls and managed to learn how to juggle. He's actually really good. It's quite impressive.
- Synchronized ice skating. Have you ever seen it? It's incredibly beautiful!
- Discovering chocolate in your drawer that you'd forgotten you had (because you'd buried it so your littlest sister who LOVES getting into other people's chocolate couldn't find it) and your day goes from average to awesome immediately.
- Answers to prayer. At the beginning of the year I prayed for a Bible study or some sort of Christian small group to go to. I am now attending two!! One's a weekly university Christian group I joined with Danella; the other is a fortnightly one run by a few friends who invited me along. Both are awesome. I prayed for one and God gave me two!
- Having fun doodling and practicing swirly lettering. :) Also just the reminder that we're forever loved!!
- Chocolate chip cookie bowls for icecream. Okay, so the jean skirt tutorial didn't work so well, but I found another thing online - how to make chocolate chip cookie bowls that you can put icecream in. Those worked. I made them for my family for dessert the other day and they were quite popular.
- Finishing up doing a Bible study on the book of Romans. I loved the study. Romans is such a neat book! I learnt so much.
- Beautiful sunsets.

A + A // Silverfish + Stuff Siblings Say

- Running around a corner in your house full-tilt only to nearly collide into one of your siblings who just happened to be running full-tilt around the same corner in the opposite direction. And not being able to say, "It's so dangerous to run around corners!" (like you usually would in this situation) because you were running around the corner too. :P
- When you are talking and someone else comes and cuts into the conversation and starts talking to you and blatantly ignoring the person you were originally talking to, leaving them just standing there like, wow, what just happened?
- Mutual agreements at cross-purposes.
- When you see a photo of yourself and can't help sitting there looking at the photo thinking, "if I had this photo in a photo editing program right now I would change this.... and this.... and this..... and this..... and this.... and then catching yourself thinking that and being annoyed at yourself for thinking it but still thinking it because being annoyed at yourself for thinking it doesn't actually stop you from thinking it.
- Mutual agreements at cross-purposes.
- When you see a photo of yourself and can't help sitting there looking at the photo thinking, "if I had this photo in a photo editing program right now I would change this.... and this.... and this..... and this..... and this.... and then catching yourself thinking that and being annoyed at yourself for thinking it but still thinking it because being annoyed at yourself for thinking it doesn't actually stop you from thinking it.
- When you meet someone at something you were completely not expecting to meet them at and there's that mutual "oh wow, this is awkward, what do I say?!" moment before you both recover.
- When you stay in a holiday house that happens to have silverfish so every. single. item you took on holiday has to be shaken outside before it can come back into your regular house. Every item. Takes FOREVER.
- Awkward endings to conversations.
- Getting lost in a pair of shorts while trying to put them on. I somehow manage to do things which probably no one has ever done before.
- When you stay in a holiday house that happens to have silverfish so every. single. item you took on holiday has to be shaken outside before it can come back into your regular house. Every item. Takes FOREVER.
- Awkward endings to conversations.
- Getting lost in a pair of shorts while trying to put them on. I somehow manage to do things which probably no one has ever done before.
- A package that arrives in the mail that has been wrapped so, so well it takes quite a bit of time and ingenuity for you to eventually be able to open it.
Awesome:
- Looking around you at your life and thinking, wow, I have been ridiculously blessed far, far beyond what I deserve. To be honest, I don't think there is anyone on this earth who couldn't say that, no matter where they are or what their life looks like.
- Little siblings who say the most hilarious things ever
- The sound of cicadas chirping merrily outside.We live in a subdivision that is semi newish and the cicadas and other insects are only just starting to arrive.
- Fresh strawberries from the garden!
- Old photos
- HITTING 100,000 VIEWS ON MY BLOG!!! WAHOO! Here's proof right here (screenshot captured on the 26th of February 2016):
