Here's a Hair post

A while ago one of my readers sent me an email and asked for a hair post. Today I thought I might do that... although I'm warning you - what I do with my hair is CERTAINLY nothing fancy at all!!

Firstly, I wash my hair twice a week - either Tuesday/Wednesday and Saturday, usually.

I favour morning showers... just because it helps to wake me up and I like going into the day clean. I do like evening showers too, but then you have wet hair when you go to bed and it's not as easy to deal with.

My hair is thinnish and medium lengthish and brownish. Very 'ish'. There are a lot of times I've longed for really long, blonde, wavy hair... but God saw fit to give me brown hair that refuses to go the slightest bit wavy without some 'encouragement' from me! :)

What does that encouragement look like?  Good question.

Curling irons annoy me because they take forever and I haven't actually managed to figure out the best way to use mine. I've owned it for ages and use it sometimes but I'm never satisfied with how it ends up looking!

I find that my hair cycle goes like this:

It's not terribly scientific but you get the idea. As the time increases after I've washed it, the dirtiness of my hair increases. As it gets less clean, it gets more dirty. :P It's kind of a gradual gentle slope - it doesn't suddenly go really bad on day 2, it lets me down gently. :P

I usually just leave my hair out and straight the same day after I wash it. Then when I go to bed I put it up into a really high (kind of silly-looking, but who is looking at me when I'm in bed??) bun. If I want my hair particularly curly/wavy the next morning I'll also slightly wet the ends. Then I sleep.

Here's my random bun :P Right on top so it doesn't annoy me in bed.

The next morning I take it out and it's wavy and actually has quite a lot of volume! Yay for volume! :)  I then style it however I'm going to wear it - a ponytail maybe, maybe just leave it out, a half up, a side ponytail, whatever.

The volume (and wave) I get from the bed bun will gradually decrease throughout the day but it's amazing how much 'lift' you can get from sleeping with your hair in a bun. I found this anyway! It's like (and I'm too lazy to draw another graph) it jumps the cleanness up a couple of cm back into the previous day's slot. I don't know how to explain it better than that, and if you don't understand feel free to moan about it in the comments. :)

Anyway, where was I?

Oh yes. So the first night I do a bun. The second night I do too. It just works really well for me. If I wash my hair the next day the cycle repeats itself, otherwise just add another day onto it!

When I wash my hair I don't use conditioner. I find it makes my hair SUPER smooth - and like I said before, my hair is so naturally thin I do love some volume! So just shampoo for me. Saves money too.

I think that's everything possible I could tell you about my hair. I don't do anything super fancy - that's not me! Basically I like to keep things simple. So I do.

Any questions? Ask away.

Hair Tutorial // Sophia Lucia lace braided bun

Good morning, friends!

It's been a while since I've done a hair tutorial so here's a hair tutorial. Today I would like to show you how to create a Sophia Lucia lace braided bun. I have no idea why it's called a Sophia Lucia lace braided bun, the person who taught me how to do it called it that so... yeah!

Enjoy!

Many thanks to Sophie for being my model! Don't you think it's fitting - Sophia Lucia bun with Sophie as the model??? :)

Skills required:
This will be a heap easier for you if you already know how to french braid or lace braid (just french braiding but only taking hair from one side). If you can't do that, you could either check out my old tutorial on french braiding or just enjoy the pictures. :).

Materials required:
See photo below.
Hair band / tie
Hair brush
Pins
Bun maker (I often use an old sock that has had the toe cut off and been rolled up, it gives you the same shape)

Are you ready? Find someone to practice on and let's go!

Scoop the hair into a ponytail.

Now place your bun maker over the ponytail, pulling almost all of the hair through it so it's around it like the hairband. Make sure you leave out a small section as shown.

Have the person tip their head forward so the bun maker is right on the top of the head. 'Scatter' the hair evenly around the bun maker, letting it fall loosely.
Take hold of three sections of hair - one is the section you left out of the bun maker, the other two are just from the hair through the bun maker.

This is the tricky bit. You'll now be lace braiding with those three strands. Lace braiding is french braiding but only picking up sections to add to your braid from one side. In this case, each time you do a braid stitch on the left side you'll be picking up a section of hair from the hair that is falling loosely from the bun maker. You will want to save enough hair to get all the way round the bun maker so don't pick up like inch wide sections to begin with!!

As you lace braid your way around the bun maker, I like to pin the braid into place as I go. You don't have to at all but I find it helps to keep everything shipshape until we get to the end.

See how her head is tipped down? This bun is difficult if the bun maker isn't right on top of the head.

Almost there....

Annnd... we're at the end! You should now have a lot of hair in your hand and no more loose hair in the bun maker. Continue braiding the hair but just use an ordinary three strand braid.

Now take that braid and wrap it underneath your bun

Like so.

Bobby pin your lace braid over the three strand braid you just hid to ensure it remains hidden and to secure the bun.

And there you have it - a Sophia Lucia lace braided bun.

Question: What country would you visit if you could visit any country in the world?

5 Reasons Why I Have Long Hair

1. I have Options (with a capital O)
Since I have long hair, I can do what I want with it. I can put it in a bun, a ponytail, plait it, leave it out long... whatever. If you have short hair you are very limited to what you can do with it.

2. It's Biblical
1 Corinthians 11:15 says "but if a woman has long hair, is it not her glory? For her hair is given to her for a covering."

3. It gives me warmth and coolness.
When it is winter and really cold, I have my hair out long to keep my neck warm. When it is summertime and warm, I do my hair up to keep myself cool and to keep my hair out of my way. The benefit of having long hair is that you get that versatility. If I had short hair I would be cool in summer but cold in winter.

4. It's all I've ever known
I've never had hair very short. Apart from when I was born, of course, and it grew after that. But other than that, my hair has always been long. I love long hair. Sure, I sometimes wish it was even longer and wavier and not this boring dirty brown colour (I have always wished for blonde hair), but it's certainly better (to my way of thinking, anyway) than having anything else.

5. I like it!
Okay, this is probably the main reason I keep my hair long. I like it. I like it a lot.

Girls with long hair, what are your reasons for having long hair?
