More Photos from the Bike Trip

Should you want to see the rest of the photos, see my earlier post here.

Spying out the land

What lies around the corner?

On the first day lunch stop this butterfly landed right beside Caleb's foot.

The River "We're there!"

A boy simply must throw a stone into a river.

The campsite. Complete with flags. And bikes. One of our party had a hammock stretched between two trees (with a tarp overtop, of course) in that foresty thing in the top right corner of the picture. It was so cool, the rest of us were jealous.

Photos from the Bike Trip

I think I've already had a post with this name. So this is Photos from the Bike Trip the Second.

In this trip we started out from Burwood, biked along QEII drive and up Marshlands Road. Then we crossed the Waimak River and turned onto Tram Road somewhere after that. For most of the day (multiple hours!) we ended up biking down South Eyre Road in the heat. South Eyre Road is long and straight and hot. Then we passed the Oxford turnoff and I don't remember the names of the next few roads but we basically biked a total of 65 km that day and ended up at the Waimakariri Gorge, where we camped overnight. The second day we biked roughly the same amount of kilometres, although we took a different route. We went up Old West Coast Road most of the day, then through McLeans Island (past Orana Park) and round the airport. We went up Sawyers Arms Road and along QEII Road to finish up back in Burwood where we began.

It was quite an enjoyable trip, as our pictures probably show. My favourite part was when we were at the Waimakariri Gorge.

On the road...

And... we're there! Filling up/filtering some bottles of water.

We went for a walk after tea to see the other side of the Gorge. Apparently not many people take photos from this side of the river.

Awkward and Awesome + Happy Birthday

I don't do these posts very often because usually I forget all my awkward moments of the day. There are lots of them... but I forget them when I stare at a blank computer screen, wondering what to post. So here are some that have been saved for a while, coupled with some recent ones.

Awkward:

Serving a customer at Subway while trying in vain to stifle an awful attack of the hiccups. The poor customer was trying in vain not to laugh, while I was also trying in vain not to turn beet red. Not a good situation. Probably my most embarrassing moment ever.

Watching Mum give Jacob a piece of kumera. "It's a bit hot, so be careful." Mum proceeds to drop the kumera accidentally in his cup of water, producing giggles from all the watching siblings and a smile on Jacob's face. Hearing his little voice saying, "It's not hot now, Mummy!"

Waving at someone you think you know... and then they give you that awkward stare and the "Who are you?" look. I don't know them, after all.

"How are you?" "Doing well thanks, how are you?" "Good thanks, and you?"

We were at the Warehouse and I couldn't find something I was looking for. I saw a lady nearby who was wearing a red shirt and naively assumed she worked there. "Excuse me, do you know where the .... is kept?" Blank look... "No sorry, I don't. Maybe you could ask a staff member?" (Oops.)

Telling someone an awesome joke... then they kind of look at you funny and you realise in shock/horror/dismay that they were the one who originally told it to you.

Spilling an entire rack of stacked dishes onto the floor. Spending twenty minutes picking them all back up again... only to knock them all onto the floor a second time when you are carefully placing the last one.

Folding up the washing and having trouble figuring out the difference between Caleb and Jacob's pyjamas. Then picking up Jana's tiny wee clothes and thinking, "Well, I'm not getting these muddled up!" Duh. They are pink. Boy's clothes are not generally pink.

Awesome:

When a customer tells you that you are doing a good job at what you do. Seriously... no one ever says that! Thank you, random stranger!

Vegetarian spaghetti bolognaise. It sounds gross, but it's really yum.

Putting chocolate into your nut mix (scroggin) for a bike trip. And totally wanting to eat it then and there.

Devouring books.

When the washing is completely finished and there is no mountain on the couch any more.

Playing tickling games with Jacob while trying to get him to wash his hands before tea. So much fun.

Music. Soothing and stirring and satisfying.

And last... best of all. Birthdays.

Happy birthday to my wonderful Daddy!!
May you have a wonderful year. You are totally awesome. I love you so much. Happy Birthday!

Ultra Busy

The title says it all! Recently I have been super-ultra-busy. What with my usual chores, my job, my course (it's just started), trying to write a speech, packing for a bike trip this weekend and just trying to keep on top of everything I am supposed to keep on top of, life has been super busy!

Date... March 6th 2014 (Tomorrow is Dad's birthday!)

Starting time... 1:50pm

Mood... tired

Outside my window... the jigger swing and some bushes

I'm thinking... trying to concentrate on typing plus thinking about the possibilities of something I'm hoping to do at the public speaking group as well as listening to Danella plan the packing list

I'm currently reading... Writing Mysteries, edited by Sue Grafton (lots of authors)... really good book!

I'm listening to... lots of things.

I'm wearing... a long comfortable flowy brown skirt and a purple stripy top.

I'm looking forward to... when life goes back to normal!

I'm hoping... Daddy has a wonderful birthday

Yesterday, I... got the aforementioned book out of the library

I'm hungry for... chocolate

The song stuck in my head is... It is Well with my Soul (I have been singing it a lot recently)

I love... the non-tired feeling

I loathe... mushy zucchini

Picture of the week...

How is your week going?

I can hear myself being called to go and help the others clean... there's always lots going on around here!

Guest Post // Some Thoughts on Fitness

Firstly I’d like to thank Bonnie for the opportunity to do this guest post.

How fit are you?

I’m someone who really likes playing sports (basically any sport: soccer, cricket, rugby, tennis, etc - but particularly basketball). I’ve found that I need to keep fit to play well and I’m going to tell you on this guest post some of the ways I enjoy (or sometimes don’t enjoy when I’m in the middle of an exercise) keeping fit.

There are a lot of benefits (:P) to keeping fit, such as emergencies where perhaps you might have to run for a while to get help or lift someone out of a burning building. Also it will help with heart health, flexibility, and just overall healthiness in your life.

I have listed several exercises below that I find are really good ways to keep fit. All are easy movements that can be done with minimal equipment (except maybe for the one involving a rope) because all are body-weight exercises.

Squat:

The squat is one of the exercises I do every day in warming up for basketball. I do it to warm up my knee muscles but it is also good for core strength, flexibility, and balance. You know how you see babies squatting down on their heels? It’s easy for them because they’re flexible but as you get older you can lose this skill and actually find it hard to squat all the way down without losing your balance. They are one of the most useful exercises you can do, and you’ll really appreciate being good at them when you are 80 years old and want to get up off the couch.

Start in a standing position

Squat down until the crease of your hips is level with or lower than the top of your knee. Keep back straight and chest up.

Push-up:
The push-up is not just good for your chest and shoulder muscles but also your torso and some of your leg muscles. A thing I like to do every-now-and-then is check how many I can do in a row without stopping. (My basketball coaches make us do these all the time :P)
Check how many you can do without stopping. J

Start with chest touching or almost touching the ground

Extend your arms until they’re locked out. Keep your back straight

Pull-up:
This is a really good exercise that I guess could come in handy in a number of situations. Hold onto a bar, lower yourself until you’re dangling and then try and pull yourself up and get your chin over the bar. This can be quite challenging at first but with a bit of practice it’s not too hard to get five or more in a row. There is also another way you can do pull-ups which is called the Kipping Pull-up. Basically you swing your body and use the momentum to pull yourself upwards. It’s much quicker and less energy consuming this way but it takes a little while to learn to get your timing right.

Start from a hanging position

Pull your body upwards until your chin is over the bar

Rope Climb:
Another really good exercise is the rope climb and this too, I’m sure, could come in handy in emergencies. To climb a rope you need a mixture of both your legs and arms - probably more your legs than arms in fact, if you do it right.
We have plaited together a rope and hung it from a tree and all the kids in our family enjoy climbing (or swinging on) it.

So there you have four body-weight exercises; all of them will help you get fitter. But the way I most enjoy keeping fit is by playing sport (namely basketball).

Sport is the most fun way of keeping fit, particularly if you are on team (like in basketball). And just practicing whatever sport you play (unless it’s bowling) will really help. Maybe learn to run longer distances, or short distances faster? Maybe you should try out basketball if you’ve never played it before!

Also I would like to learn what types of exercises and sports other people do. Thanks for reading this and I hope you have fun keeping fit.

When you’re thinking about exercise though, just remember this too:
“for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8).
