Kirigami fun

Okay, today I thought I would show all of you something we have been doing for the past wee while. Kirigami! This is the Japanese art of cutting and folding. It's really interesting.. check it out on wikipedia if you want to know more. It's a bit like origami except the designs you make are a lot different.

Without further ado, here are some of the designs we've been making.

The above one is an example of two of the techniques we learned. The butterfly fold, and the duo trick. The butterfly fold involves folding the paper into a certain shape and in a certain way then cutting then unfolding it... and it's a butterfly! The duo technique is simply two designs glued together to look more awesome. :-)

This one is made with the heart fold. It reminds me of lots of faces, with the face in the middle and lots around the outside! The holes are made with a holepunch.

This is actually quite a simple one, although it looks elaborate.

This one reminds me of lots of fish swimming in the sea.

Another duo one. Can you see the two designs- the red one and the pink one?

This is another duo one.

Here is another technique demonstrated. This involves cutting a certain part, but not completely, then folding the cut bits back to make it 3D.

Another two designs. The one on the right is not as complicated and difficult as it looks!

Another one using the butterfly fold.

This one used the duo technique.

You don't have to make ones of a certain look! All of the designs are quite different.

You can even make 3D flowers and things, as is illustrated above by this flower. It has a stem and petals.

The designers doing their work.

The process, as illustrated in photographs. This design will make a heart. First you fold it up and start cutting.

Once it's all cut, you unfold it.

Voila! The design that was made.

 Which one is your favourite?

    1. We think so too! They are much nicer up close then in a photograph though, of course.

  3. Those are so pretty! I've done snowflakes before, but nothing as elaborate as that. I do remember one, though, that a great great aunt (I think) made. She somehow made a snowflake with the name "James" across it for my grandpa (his name was James). I'm not sure what happened to it, but it was very intricate and pretty!

    1. Wow! I can only imagine what would happen if I tried to make a kirigami design with words/letters on it! It wouldn't work! She must have been really good at that. :-)
