You know you're from a big family when....

You're never lonely... or alone.
There's always someone to play with, practice card tricks on, tickle, tease, read stories to and go crazy with. However, get used to the fact that you're not alone very often!

You're really good at sharing.
And knowing exactly how many pieces to cut things into. Twelve people = four oranges and everyone gets a third each. Twelve people = five croissants so everyone gets half each apart from the two people who aren't home today... what they don't know can't hurt them. :P

You're used to noise.
A bit of noise? No big deal! You should hear the volume of our dinner times. It's something else.

You seem to be constantly getting birthday presents for people.
There are twelve immediate family birthdays in a year. But hey, at least that means you get lots of presents when your turn comes around!

Trying to take a family photo is a bit of a mission.
Wait, you think it's hard with your family of four? Haha, you have no idea. :P

Chores get shared around.
You eagerly anticipate the day when your younger siblings get old enough to share the housework. That day comes, and it's wonderful!

People are always counting you and pointing at you and whispering together.
Yes, there are ten kids. Yes, we drive a large van. Yes, we do argue/fight with each other occasionally but we do get along well in general. Yes, our mum is a superwoman. Yes, we love each other. And yes, there's another one on the way.

You're really good at eating fast.
At the beginning of the meal: "Mum, are there seconds tonight?" "Yes, but not much." *everyone proceeds to speed-eat in order to get some of those seconds*
Dad likes to joke that there are two kinds of people in our family- the quick and the hungry!

Your younger siblings wear a lot of hand-me-downs.
And it's not all bad, really.

You're used to answering to each other's names.
Mum: "Come here, Abbie, no, Sophie, no, Lydia, no, BEN! No, Danella, no, Bonnie.... whoever you are, come here and help with this."

Prime seating is limited.
If the family is watching a movie together, chances are, someone's sitting on the floor! And we can't all fit round the dining room table anymore so one or two people have to sit at another table in the dining room.

You've watched large quantities of food disappear in five minutes flat many a time.
You wouldn't believe how much food we get through.

Showers are rostered.
If you want a morning shower, you have to book it the night before. That means you go around asking everyone "Are you having a shower tomorrow?" If the answer is yes, you work out who is going first and what time they will be out. If the answer is no, cue the sweet bliss of being able to have a long shower (this doesn't happen very often!).

Everyone always confuses you with your siblings.
But that's fine because we all answer to each other's names, anyway. :P See above point.

You LOVE your family and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.
BECAUSE BIG FAMILIES ARE AMAZING!!!! Especially mine. :)

(photo from Feb 2015 - we haven't gotten around to taking any newer ones!)

Do you come from a big family? Any of these sound familiar?

  1. Oh, yes, very familiar! I think you know what you're talking about.

  2. But 10 kids isn't a big family. 11 is :P

    1. That's subjective. It's your opinion that 11 is considered 'big' and ten is not.
In the interests of objectivity, I googled 'how many kids is considered a big family' and although there was no 'official' answer, there were multiple websites and forums and things that reckon that 4 kids is considered a big family.
With that in mind, since there are more than 4 kids in our family, I feel like I can say that I come from a big family.
Yours is currently bigger, sure, but ours is still big.
I feel like you're baiting me on purpose, David. :P

    2. Now, would I do something like that?

And in my subjective opinion, 4 kids is not a big family. Agree?

    3. To that first one, *no comment*

I agree. Probably upwards of 6 is big, at least.

  3. Yes!! These are so true!! And then when you leave home you miss the noise & constant hugs & awesome craziness.....
I had a funny one this weekend, while I was in Wellington, staying with a friend's parents...they were super-busy cooking & making food (for around 60 people), and I fit right into the chaos, to the point that i was anticipating & finding what was needed next, and I was asked whether I had lots of siblings....

    1. Awwww.... yep, we take it for granted when we have it, but once it's gone we miss it!
Haha, that's awesome! How was your time in Wellington? Sounds like you did fit right in.

    2. Totally!!
It was brilliant!!! A really fun weekend, with heaps of laughter and good times and feeling like one of the family :)

  4. My brother built an extension for the dining table, though it's only necessary if every Redepenning is home (including big bro and fam).
As far as seconds go, it isn't first come first served. The usual occurrence: someone asks if anyone wants more, no response, eats it up, then there's an outcry that someone did want it but didn't hear!
Getting presents only for birthdays, not for Christmas saves a bunch of stress and money!

  8. I lot of people I know who come from big families really have some first-rate qualities (nay, even virtues). Not to over generalize or make blanket statements, but I think there is a whole different level of patience that develops in my friends with many siblings, that most of us aren't used to. The sharing issue is huge and is wonderful. I think I know how to share, but I would be really challenged if I had to share with lots of younger siblings. It would take many people (myself included) a long time to develop the kind of selfless-ness I have seen some of my friends exhibit. I am so happy for you all that your mother is expecting again! Love you-

    1. I think the thing is- you have so many other people in the house that you have to learn to get along with each other! :)
I'm sure you know how to share! You're wonderful.
Thank you for your sweet comment. You're such a blessing! :)

  9. Most of those sound very much like our family. I must say it is great now that my younger two brothers are getting older and they can set the fire and collect sticks and do the garbage.... jobs I used to hate doing.

    1. Lighting the fire, bringing in wood and doing the rubbish are definitely boys jobs, in my opinion. :P I've gotten a bit better at lighting the fire since we moved to our new place, though.
      Thank you for commenting!

  10. Whoever is up first gets to take a shower in our house!
And people are CONSTANTLY COUNTING US! It's so funny!

  11. I don't live in a big family, compared to yours, but I can definitely relate to these things!

I have 3 siblings. Two sisters and a twin brother! Are there any twins in your family?

  12. You know you're in a big family when, despite how hard you try, you just CAN'T cook food for 10 people (or less!). There's always too much…

  13. Oh Bonnie! You echoed my thoughts exactly! Even though there are only 7 children and two parents in my family, it still gets pretty chaotic round here...sometimes even a lot chaotic! Ah yes...I am so used to being called Nancy because although we don't look at all similar, it happens when there are a lot of you. And noisy mealtimes - yes, I can totally relate! As soon as baby Caleb gets a bit bigger, we are definitely not going to fit around our dining room table...already there are elbows in everyone's faces! But I absolutely love the family and siblings I have... I often wish there were more of us, what fun that would be!!
Thank you for sharing this lovely post, Bonnie! It put a big smile on my face and reminded to count the MANY blessings in this life!
    Hugs to you!

    1. Hehee, chaos is fabulous! :) And yes, although there is rather a lot of noise and chaos, it really is wonderful and I wouldn't have it any other way! It really is such a lot of fun.
Yay! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Counting our blessings is always is a good thing to do.
